Black Soldier Fly Products: Sustainable Solutions for Animal Feed and Fertilizer
After a quick 10-day growth cycle, our Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae are ready to be harvested and used in various ways to benefit large-scale farming operations. Our products support sustainable animal feed, organic fertilizer, and BSF breeding.
Ideal for on-site feeding, especially if the Finch container is located on a pig or poultry farm. Live larvae are packed with nutrients and offer the natural movement that pigs and chickens enjoy as they forage. Farmers can also mix larvae with other feed as needed.
For longer storage or broader distribution, dried larvae can be sold directly to other farms or through agricultural retailers.
The nutrient-rich by-product left after larvae harvesting, frass is an effective organic fertilizer packed with nitrogen and potassium. It’s suitable for both large agricultural applications and smaller, domestic uses.
BSF Breeding Products from our Ruiru Reproduction Centre:
Pupae – Ready for mating, these pupae can be placed in a “love nest” where male and female flies naturally pair up, resulting in egg clusters of up to 700.
Eggs – Freshly harvested eggs are available for breeding.
5DOL – These young larvae are the ideal age to introduce to a fresh food substrate on farms.
Love Nests – Custom-designed structures to encourage optimal mating conditions for BSF, made on-site in partnership with Manna Insect.
Trays – Our durable, stackable trays are available for convenient pick-up at Ruiru. Please contact us to confirm availability.
FIP offers high-quality BSF products and breeding solutions designed for efficiency, sustainability, and cost savings.

Case Study: Transforming Pig Waste into Sustainable Feed with Black Soldier Fly Farming
Finch Insect Protein Limited (FIP) recently completed a successful Proof of Concept (POC) at a large pig farm in Kajiado County, Kenya. This trial demonstrated that pig waste can serve as an effective food substrate for Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, aligning with scientific research while proving its effectiveness in a real-world farm environment.
This trial helped us refine several operational aspects, such as optimal tray types, substrate amounts, and larvae density. We developed efficient methods for loading trays at the start of the 10-day growth cycle and unloading them after the fattening period. Strict sanitation practices, such as careful collection and handling of pig waste, were established to prevent contamination from house flies. These findings ensure that our customers receive a streamlined, highly efficient setup that maximizes productivity.
The POC also highlighted unexpected challenges with power supply. In this off-grid location, solar panels and batteries were used without a backup generator. We optimized the system to guarantee continuous power, crucial for maintaining environmental conditions during the growth cycle. FIP will collaborate with you to design the most effective power solution for your specific needs, incorporating it into your package if required.
Our results revealed that BSF larvae fed on pig waste reached a protein content exceeding 60%, making it a highly nutritious feed source. By utilizing animal-generated waste, we reduce the need for external food waste, cutting transportation costs significantly. This process also offers a sustainable solution to waste management and feed costs, making it ideal for farmers seeking alternatives to costly imported soy-based feeds.
Whether your farm generates animal waste or you can source affordable food waste, FIP’s solutions deliver cost-effective, eco-friendly benefits tailored to your operations.
