Our Approach
Our Innovative Approach to Black Soldier Fly Farming
At Finch Insect Protein Limited (FIP), we’re transforming Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming in Africa with a scientific, data-driven approach that goes beyond small-scale operations. While many local farmers rear BSF primarily for personal use, we bring a scalable, technology-based solution through our exclusive partnership with Finnish tech company Manna Insect.
Our method utilizes specially adapted 20-foot shipping containers fitted with Manna Insect’s advanced environmental control technology, which maintains optimal temperature, humidity, and airflow to ensure rapid, consistent growth over a 10-day cycle. This entire system is remotely monitored from Finland, with local oversight via mobile apps, allowing precise, real-time adjustments.
As Manna Insect’s African partner, we provide everything needed to set up your containerized BSF facility. Our field managers will guide you in establishing and maintaining your BSF production, offering on-site training to ensure your team can operate efficiently. Located in Ngong, Kajiado County, our operational base is equipped with a ready supply of adapted containers and equipment, tailored to each customer’s needs—whether powered by the grid, generators, or solar super-capacitors.
Our breeding facility in Ruiru, Kiambu County guarantees a steady supply of high-quality larvae when you need them. For face-to-face meetings, we welcome clients to our centrally located offices in Delta Towers, Waiyaki Way, Nairobi, or other locations as convenient. And, thanks to our StarLink network connection, even our remote clients can enjoy seamless communication and support.

Tray Housing Solutions for Optimal Black Soldier Fly Production
An essential part of successful Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming is the design of the trays used to house feeding larvae. At Finch Insect Protein Limited (FIP), we’ve collaborated with a Nairobi-based plastic manufacturer to create a custom tray specifically tailored to maximize BSF production.
Our shallow, stackable trays are designed to hold the ideal amount of food substrate, based on our research into larvae feeding preferences. Unlike crates, our trays keep the substrate at an optimal depth, allowing larvae to feed more efficiently. For ease of handling, the trays are lightweight and ergonomically designed to minimize strain during lifting.
Each tray is fully stackable and equipped with ventilated slots covered in a mesh to prevent larvae from escaping. When it’s time to harvest, trays of mature larvae can be processed manually or with an automated sieving machine—also developed locally—to separate larvae from frass by particle size. Fresh trays are then loaded with the precise ratio of food substrate and larvae, carefully weighed to ensure balanced feeding.
Our partnership with local manufacturers means shorter delivery times and consistent quality. We keep a steady stock of trays at our Ngong warehouse for customer orders, with additional inventory available for retail customers at our Ruiru facility.
Enhance your BSF production with durable, locally-crafted trays from FIP—engineered for efficiency and optimal growth conditions.
Target Market: Large-Scale Waste Solutions for Sustainable Farming
While much of the current interest in Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming comes from small-scale farmers, Finch Insect Protein Limited (FIP) focuses on large-scale operations facing waste management challenges. Our solution not only reduces waste but also significantly cuts costs on animal feed and fertilizers, making it ideal for commercial farms and industrial producers.
We’re currently active in Kenya, where our clients include a diverse range of partners—from pig farms and universities to avocado oil producers. Through our exclusive partnership with Manna Insect, we’re expanding across Africa, leveraging their educational and marketing reach. FIP clients automatically benefit from Manna’s advanced Mind I.T. system, which ensures optimal BSF production through precise environmental monitoring.
Join us in transforming waste into value and reducing operational costs with sustainable BSF farming.
